Requirements Application Form (mailing information is provided on the form) 1. A student may enroll for high school independent study at any time during the year. 2. A student should not enroll for more than two courses of one-half (1/2) unit each at any one time. 3. Only one (1) unit earned through high school independent study may be applied toward high school graduation in the State of Mississippi. 4. If the student plans to use units earned for high school graduation, approval must be secured from the principal at the high school from which he/she plans to graduate. (Principal's signature must be on application.) 5. To enroll in a course offered by high school independent study, fill out the application form, get appropriate signatures, and return it with the appropriate fees to the Division of Academic Outreach & Continuing Education. Please make checks or money orders payable to Mississippi State University. The course fee does not include cost of textbook or workbook. 6. Upon approving the application, the high school principal will appoint a course supervisor at the local school. This may be a counselor or teacher at the school. The duties of the supervisor include periodic counseling with the students in connection with the course and administering required tests. 7. A final grade report is sent to the student and the student's school after the course is completed. 8. Graduating seniors must enroll in time to have all lessons and tests completed three weeks before graduation. The fee is $120 per one-half (1/2) unit or $240 for one (1) unit. This course fee does not include the cost of textbooks. Textbooks may be borrowed from your school or purchased directly from the Barnes & Noble at Mississippi State University. Do not include payment for textbooks with your enrollment. Any overpayment (or payment that includes textbook fee) will be refunded and will result in a delay in receiving your textbook. Payment may be made by check, money order, or major credit card. A $40 fee will be charged for any returned checks. When paying in person, please bring exact amount; the Independent Study office cannot make change. The published fees are effective immediately and are subject to change by the appropriate officials of Mississippi State University without prior notice. Extension fees are $25 for a three month extension. Two extension fees are allowed. If books are unavailable at your local school, they may be purchased from: Barnes & Nobles at Mississippi State University Please place all book orders directly with the bookstore. Any payment for books sent to the Independent Study Office will be returned to the student and will result in a delay in delivery of the textbook A partial refund of the enrollment fee will be made for students withdrawing from a course provided the following conditions are met: 1. A written intent of withdrawal is received from the student within two (2) months of the date of enrollment. 2. No lesson assignments have been submitted. 3. All course materials are returned in good condition. An 80% refund will be made from the date of enrollment through day 30. A 50% refund will be made from day 31 through day 60. Requests for refunds are processed on the first of each month. Students may expect to receive their refund checks approximately two (2) weeks later. No refunds will be made after sixty (60) days from the date of enrollment. All lessons and tests are to be sent via email to hsis@aoce.msstate.edu . Upon receipt, the Division of Academic Outreach & Continuing Education(AOCE) will log-in the lesson/test and forward to the instructor electronically. The instructor will grade and return all lessons and tests back to hsis@aoce.msstate.edu with in 7-10 days of receipt. The graded lessons and tests will again be logged-in by AOCE and forwarded to the student via email.
1. Two (2) or more written examinations will be required in all courses offered through high school independent study. 2. If a student is enrolled in Part I and Part II of the same course, NO test may be taken for Part II until Part I has been completed. 3. Tests will not be graded until the appropriate lessons, as specified in the course syllabus, have been received. Supervisors should ensure the appropriate lessons have been submitted before administering any tests. 4. No final exam will be administered less than one month (30 days) from the date of enrollment. 5. Each student is required to take all tests and the final exam under the supervision of a school official (administrator, guidance counselor, or faculty member), none of whom may be a member of the student's family. 6. Tests are to be taken as directed in the course. No more than one test should be taken at a single sitting. An instructor may refuse to grade lesson assignments submitted beyond the assigned test until it has been administered. 7. Only the test grade will be returned to the student. 8. All lesson assignments and tests must be completed three (3) weeks before graduation or before a final grade is needed. Grades on lesson assignments are usually returned to the student within 7-10 days; however, when instructors are away for summer vacations or when their commitments are exceptionally heavy, prompt service cannot be guaranteed. Upon completion of a course, including the final examination, a final grade will be sent to the student and to his/her high school. Any questions regarding final grades can be sent to AOCE at hsis@aoce.msstate.edu. Students who fail exams but earn a grade higher than 45% may retake an alternate form of the test if a request for retake is made in writing by the high school principal. The student must pay a $40 fee for each retake. No retakes will be granted more than two (2) weeks after the student receives a final grade.
