Time Limits

Students have up to one (1) year to complete an Independent Study course. The minimum time allowed for completion of a three-hour course is thirty (30) days from the date of registration. The minimum time for the completion of two (2) three-hour courses, taken concurrently, is forty-five (45) days from the date of registration.

After 1 year time limit for 555 Section course(s)has expired, your Grade will automatically roll to an "F".

You may apply for two (2) three-month extensions should you require more time to complete a course at a cost of $50.00 per extension ($100.00 total).

Notification to extend will NOT be sent.

NO EXTENSIONS are given for 901 Section courses.

Materials & Textbooks

Course materials are the student’s responsibility and may include textbooks, audiotapes, videotapes, computer disks, compact-disks, etc. Textbook information is provided with each course purchased. For those who desire to know the textbook information in advance, contact the College Independent Study office at 662.325.8382.

Prerequisities

Students are responsible for meeting all prerequisites. Any person who has the proper prerequisites for a specific course may be enrolled. Students at Mississippi State University found to not have the prerequisites may be dropped without a refund or may be denied credit.

Students at other colleges and universities are responsible for confirming their prerequisites and should only enroll in courses for which they are prepared.

Grades

Grades on lesson assignments are submitted via MyCourses.

Final Grades
NO Bulk assignment submissions and/or Test taking is Permitted.
If any of the following apply to you, THE STUDENT, please complete Assignments & Tests at least 3 weeks before Final Grades are due: NO more than 3 assignments may be submitted in any one week. Please plan accordingly for Final Grades.

v - Applied for Graduation in current Semester.
v - Signed up in a Semester Based Section (901) with College IS.
v - Need Grade posted for current Semester (regardless of the Section number - 555 or 901).

Proctor Request

Proctors should hold one of the following positions:

  1. Public or private community college or university faculty or staff within an academic department, distance learning or independent study office, counseling or advising center, dean, registrar, official testing center, library, HRM office.
  2. Public or private K-12 faculty, principal or headmaster, vice-principal, guidance counselor, library, or school superintendent
  3. Certified city or county librarian
  4. United State Armed Forces Education Officer
  5. Interactive Video Site Facilitator
  6. Organizational supervisor or HRM officer

Maximum Credit Hours

No more than twenty percent (20%) of any curriculum may be earned through College Independent Study courses. Individual departments at MississippiStateUniversitymay have other restrictions, as well. Please contact your college for this information prior to enrollment.
