Tuition

College Independent Study Courses are $449.00 per three credit hour course.

All College Independent Study courses are assessed the three credit hour rate regardless of student load.

Course Levels

All Independent Study Courses are offered at the undergraduate level at this time.

No graduate credit courses are available through Independent Study.

Audits

Any Independent Study course may be audited. When enrolling in the course, the student should note that the course is for audit only. Audits do not require a final examination and no grade will be entered on the student’s record. Courses may be audited for the full tuition price.

Degrees And Diplomas

Mississippi State University does not offer a degree or diploma through Independent Study. However, independent study course work can be transferred to a degree program. For regulations regarding the amount of correspondence credit that may be applied to a degree program, students must consult the registrar at the institution where they plan to earn their degree.

Transcripts

Final grades will be recorded in the Mississippi State University Registrar’s office. A final grade report will be sent to the student from the Independent Study Office at the end of each course. Official transcripts must be requested from the Registrar’s Office:

There is a charge of $5 for each copy. Allow at least one week for the processing of a transcript request. No transcript will be provided if the student has outstanding fees at Mississippi State University.

Change of Address, Telephone, or Email Address

You will be expected to give your correct local and permanent address, telephone numbers, and e-mail address to the Independent Study office. Notifying the office of any change is the student’s responsibility. Failure to correct the address does not relieve you of the responsibility of receiving mail from us on the grounds that the correspondence was not delivered.

Technical Requirements

  • Windows 2000, or XP; Macintosh OS 9 or better
  • Microsoft Office 2000 or Office XP
  • 850MHz (or comparable processor) or better
  • 128 MB of RAM min. (256MB RAM or higher recommended)
  • 56K modem or better for dial-up Internet (optional if using High-Speed Internet)
  • Internet Service Provider (ISP) account for Internet access and e-mail address.
  • Internet Browser: Netscape, Internet Explorer, Opera, or Mozilla
  • Anti-Virus software
  • There may be other software that may need to be purchased as required per specific curriculum. Check with your instructor to make sure you have all of the necessary software for your course.

Accreditation

Courses offered through Independent Study are fully accredited through Mississippi State University and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Independent Study courses are developed and conducted by Mississippi State University faculty members and approved by the appropriate academic department.

The Division of Academic Outreach & Continuing Education Independent Study program is a member of University Continuing Education Association (UCEA) and Association of Continuing Higher Education (ACHE).
