Examinations

A final examination is required for all Independent Study courses taken for credit. Most Independent Study courses require students to complete proctored examinations. Most online courses will require students to go to a testing site to take examinations. Several online courses do test online without a proctor. Online students may contact the Independent Study Office for testing requirements for their course, as well as the locations of testing sites. Examination request forms are included in each course packet or on the home page of the online course. Examinations may be requested by e-mail istesting@aoce.msstate.edu. Examinations will not be sent until all required assignments are completed and received in the Independent Study Office and an approved proctor is selected. No final exam will be administered in less than one month (30 days) from the date of enrollment.

Independent Study students residing in Mississippi are to take their examinations at one of thirty-five (35) examination centers in the state. A list of test center sites is enclosed in each course packet. Mississippi State University students or those in close proximity to the university may take examinations at the Division of Academic Outreach & Continuing Education’s test center, located in 219 Memorial Hall on the Mississippi State University campus. Examinations may be taken Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Testing Center will be closed during MSU holidays.

Out-of-state students must take exams under the supervision of a proctor approved by the Mississippi State University Independent Study office. Proctors should hold one of the following positions:

  • College or University
    • Dean
    • Registrar
    • Counseling Center Staff
    • Testing Center Staff
    • Professional Staff member of Continuing Education
  • Public or Private School Superintendent, Principal, or Headmaster
  • Certified City or County Librarian
  • Civil Service Examiner
  • United States Armed Forces Education Officer
  • USDA Food Technologist or Veterinarian who occupies a supervisory or managerial position within the agency.

Examinations with appropriate instructions for supervising the exam process will be mailed to the approved proctor. Students must submit a photo identification to the examination proctor. The student should provide adequate postage so the proctor can mail the examination to the Independent Study office. The maximum time for an examination is three (3) hours unless stated otherwise on the exam. The Independent Study Office determines who will serve as the approved proctor.
